Abstract

The variation in the dimensions of the anatomical elements of the xylem has a marked effect on the quality of wood and on the final product. In arder to gather further information about this subject samples were collected of dominant, intermediate and dominated Eucalyptus saligna trees of 7 years old. The aim is to analvze the variation in the dimensions of the anatomÍcal elements in the pith-bark and base-top directions. From each trec wood disks from the base, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the commercial height were removed. From each disk samples at 0%, )0% and 100% of the radius were defined. The anatomical elements were measurcd through image analysis. The results indicate that: a- of ali sociological classes, the dominant is the least indicated for paper and celIulose because it shows high content of radial parcnchyma; b- the highcst fiber values werc found at 25% of commercial height, the vessels showing the largest diameters at 50% of the height and the largest lengths and frequency at the top, and c- thc length diameter and wall of thc fibcrs, the tangcntial Jcngth and diarnetcr of the vcsscls, and the height and width of the rays in micrometer wcre found to increase frorn pith to bark.
