Abstract

Couroupita guianensis Aubl., popularly known as “abricó de macaco”, is a neotropical tree species, occurring in the Atlantic and Amazonian forests. Considering the ecological and economic potential, and abundance of this species, especially in the Atlantic Forest, the aim of this study was to characterize morphologically fruits, seeds, germination and seedlings, as well as the cytochemistry of C. guianensis seeds, adding data to support studies about their utilization and conservation of this species. Ripe fruits were collected from 20 trees in Recife city. It was calculated the weight of 1,000-seeds and individual measurements of length, width and thickness of the fruits and seeds for biometric determinations and morphological characterization of their internal and external parts, besides the characterization of the seedlings and their respective structures. Fruit of C. guianensis is indehiscent, drupisarcid and globous. The seed is eurispermic, albuminous, bitegumented and 1,000-seeds weight of this lot was 153.5 g. Germination is epigeous, with the tegument adhering to the cotyledons in the initial seedling growth phase; it begins on the second day after sowing in laboratory conditions. The average time and speed of germination index (GSI) were 2 days and 2.174, respectively. The seedling with 30 days has already all structures, being classified as morfofunctional phanero-epigeal foliaceous type – PEF
