Abstract

This paper analyzes 11 years (1978-1988) of phenological data for 2 tree species of the Lecythidaceae, Corythophora rimosa and Corythophora alta, including the phases of flowering, fruiting, and leaf change. Duration and frequency were determined for the reproductive phases, and type of leaf change was described. The two species flowered in both rainy and dry seasons, however, there was greater occurrence of flowering in the rainy season, with asynchrony between individuais of C.rimosa. Fruiting was observed principally in the dry season, with synchrony between individuais. The mean duration of the flowering and fruiting phases for C. alta was 6 months and for C. rimosa, 3 and 4 months respectively. On a species levei, the pattern of occurrence of the flowering and fruiting phases was annual, however, on an individual level, C. rimosa showed supra-annual behavior. Both species can be classified as evergreen, with greatest amount of leaf change in the dry season. Of the two, C. alta is the only species which could supply seed on a regular basis for research and silvicultura! purpose. C. rimosa requires more information in arder to explain its reproductive biology.
