Abstract

Birds are important seed dispersers and seed predators. Studies of frugivorous granivorous communities and plants used by them are scarce in Brazil. These can help conservation and vegetation recovery programs. We investigated the fruit and seed consumption by birds in Alberto Löfgren State Park, from September 2006 to March 2007. We collected data throughout transects and by focal observations, analyzing bird richness, resource utilized by birds (pulp, aril, seeds, etc.) and the bird importance to plant community. We recorded 38 bird species eating fruits and seeds of 16 plant species, 9 exotic plants. The thrushes were the most important plant visitors and likely have a great contribution to the seed dispersal. However, large birds like Penelope obscura were important to large seeded species. The dispersal of exotic plants can disturbed the local native biota.
