Abstract

Ex situ conservation has been adopted as a strategy to preserve species populations under extinction risk. The aims of this work were to investigate the genetic variation for quantitative traits and the selection within progenies, in a Balfourodendron riedelianum ex situ conservation bank, established at the Luiz Antônio Experimental Station in a provenance and progeny test scheme. A compact family block design was adopted, with 3 provenances, 19 progenies per provenance, 6 replicates and 5 plants per subplot. The trial was measured at 21 years of age for DBH, height, stem form, volume and survival. Significant differences among provenances for DBH, stem form and volume, and among progenies within provenances for DBH, height and volume were detected. The estimative of genetic differentiation among and within provenances indicated that large part of genetic variation (> 95%) is found within provenances. The coefficient of heritability at individual level and within progenies were low for the traits (ranging from 0.001 to 0.067), suggesting low potential for massal selection in the trail and within progenies. The coefficient of heritability, at progeny level, was substantial for DBH (0.290) and volume (0.331), indicating that the provenances have inheritable variation to respond for natural selection. The estimative of the status number was high in both before ( Ns ˆ = 124.3) and after selection ( Ns ˆ = 106.9), indicating that high evolutive potential was retained in the germplasm bank and will be retained after the selection. The results also suggest that the seeds harvested in the proposed seedorchard would contain high genetic variability and low inbreeding
