Abstract

The aim of this work was to estimate genetic parameters for growth traits in open pollinated progenies of Pinus elliottii Engelm var. elliottii at 25 years old, growing in Assis−SP, Brazil. The trial was established using 40 progenies originated from selected trees for high gum resin yield in the Assis State Forest, three repetitions, ten trees per plot and nine progenies of P. elliottii var. elliottii selected for gum resin in Manduri−SP, used as control. Significant differences among progenies for diameter at breast height - DBH stand height were detected, indicating genetic variation among progenies and the possibility to obtain gains by selection of the most productive progenies. The average growth for DBH and height of progenies were higher than the average of the control. The genetic correlation between DBH and height was high and significant ( g r = 0.83; P ≤ 0.01) showing the possibility of selection in one trait and to obtain indirect gains in other. The high coefficients of genetic variation (minimum CVg = 4.56%), genetic addictive (minimum CVA = 7.97%) and coefficients of heritabilities (minimum H2m = 0.68; 2 d h = 0.36), indicated the possibility to obtain great genetic gains for DBH (16.7%) and height (8.6%) with the selection among and within progenies. These gains are expected for stands with 25 years of age, growing in environments with the same characteristics of this trial and originated from the mating among the trees selected in this study,
