The use of insulation boards is necessary to reduce energy consumption in buildings. Usually, these boards are made of inorganic materials or are petroleum-based, but when low density particleboards are used, environmental values are added as they are non-toxic, sustainable, and biodegradable. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of residue from typical carpentry shops from the Northeast region of Brazil in the production of particleboard manually pressed as insulation material. Particleboards from Manilkara sp. and from the mix of three Caatinga native species (Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia and Cordia oncocalyx) were produced with PVA adhesive. Both particleboards had statistically equal results with exception of thickness swelling property, where boards made from Caatinga wood were more stable than Manilkara wood. The particleboards were classified as low density, with average values lower than 400 kg.m-3 , and insulation material, with thermal conductivity lower than 0.20 W.m-1 . oC -1 . Although the particleboards showed high values of thickness swelling and water absorption and low values of mechanical properties, this is not a limiting factor for the thermal insulation potential of the material and can be improved in the future by using a different adhesive with higher moisture resistant.
