Abstract

Comparisons were made among 110 open-pollinated families of Araucaria angustifàlia (Bert.) O. Ktze. frorn five provenances in Itapeva-SP. Data involved one, three, five and 18-years survival and height and 18-years DBH and volume. Analyses of variance evidenced significant variation among provenances (P < O.O 1) at ali ages studied as well as among families within provenances for height, DBH and volume. Genetic variation among provenances accounted for about 28.8% to 4.5% of the total variance; variation arnong families within provenances accounted for 21 % to 5% and within families accounted for 92% to 51.3% of the total variance. The evaluation of height, DBH and volume showed Cunha, SP, and Itararé, SP, provenances to have the fastest growth and the Bom Jardim da Serra with the slowest. Volume growth, rate at 18 years old of Cunha provenance was about 65% higher than Bom Jardim da Serra. Estimations of heritabilities ranged from 0.226 to 0.654, indicating high possibilit1es of genetic gain through selection. A combined conservation and breed I ng strategy is suggested, with expected genetic gains of about 20% in volume at 18 years old.
