Abstract

A combined provenance-progeny test of P. patula ssp. tecunumanii was established in Bento Quirino Experimental Station, São Simão, São Paulo State, Brazil, in a “compact family” blocks design with 10 provenances, 6 to 20 families per provenance, four individuals per subplot and seven replications. Variation among and within provenances and families and genetic parameters for DBH, height and stem form were investigated, about 14 years after planting. Analyses of variation for all traits revealed significant differences among provenances and height and stem form revealed significant differences among families within provenances. The evaluation of components of variation showed that provenance (ranging from 1.25 to 4.56%) and family/provenance effects (ranging from 0.61 to 3.97%) had little contribution to total variance and, thus, the high portion of the variation is found within family/provenance (ranging from 91.47 to 98.14%). The evaluation of DBH and height growth showed, respectively, San Esteban and Villa Santa, provenances from Honduras with the best and Las Piedrecitas, provenance from Mexico, with the worst for site of trial. The evaluation of stem form showed San Rafael del Norte provenance from Nicaragua, with the best and the Mount Pine Ridge, provenance from Belize, with the worse. Narrow sense individual ( h2 i ) and within family ( h2 d  ) heritability values were low for all traits, ranged from 0.0125 to DBH to 0.1107 for stem form. Family heritability ( h2 m  ) ranged from low (0.1148) to high (0.4199) for stem form. For DBH, height and stem form, the expected genetic gains were 6.36, 5.59 and 20.48%, respectively. These gains are for Pinus patula ssp. tecunumanii plantations at 14 years of age and in similar environments to the trial site.
