INFLUÊNCIA DO DESBASTE EM PROPRIEDADES FÍSICAS E MECÂNICAS DA MADEIRA DE Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex-Maiden

The purpose of this work was to verify the influence of thinning on physical and mechanical properties of the wood within an 18-year-old population of E. grandis. According to the results, it was able to conclude that a different intensity in thinning did not influence significantly the properties under study, except for the basic density, where a difference between 67% and 75% intensity occurred. In general, it was found out that there was a tendency of they reduce the values of the physical and mechanical properties under a higher intensity of thinning. When the pith to bark variation was assessed, the parallel compression, the specific mass, and the position of the bark showed the highest values of those properties whereas for the shrinkage significant difference was not observed between the closest position of the pith and position of the bark. It was also observed the occurrence of a high positive correlation between the specific mass, basic density, and the compression parallel to the grain.
