ASPECTOS DO COMPORTAMENTO DO BUGIO Alouatta fusca (PRIMATES, CEBIDAE) NO PARQUE ESTADUAL DA CANTAREIRA (SÃO PAULO)

Groups of brown howler monkeys were observed at the Cantareira State Park (São Paulo, Brazil), between July and November 1991, through both qualitative and scan sampling methods. Howlers most frequently used heights below 12 meters, a possible consequence of the small stature of the trees. Resting, locomotion and feeding accounted for 96,7 % of the records; resting alone accounted for 59,5 % of such records. Resting peaked in the middle of the day while activity (particularly feeding) was higher in the morning and the afternoon. Leaves, mainly mature ones, prevailed in the howlers diet, followed by leave buds and by fruits. Social interactions only accounted for 1,5 % of the records. Grooming rate was similar to that found in A seniculus and higher than that observed in A palliata Aggression was not recorded during sampling but we observed an agonistic episode between two males of the same group. Roaring occurred in some intergroup encounters; other intergroup encounters seemed to be marked by mutual tolerance.
