Abstract

The wild boar (Sus scrofa) is among the 100 world’s worst invasive alien species, due to its facilities in adaptation to new environments, resulting into negative impacts on natural environments and on crop felds. The free ranging wild boar along with its varied degrees of crossing with domestic pigs have been increasing in Brazil’s countryside, even inside some natural reserves. The aim of this note is to report the frst observations of wild boars in the vicinities of six fragments, which forms a full protection conservation reserve, the Vassununga State Park, in São Paulo state, Brazil. The frebreaks around six fragments were covered for 120 km in 2016. All detections of wild boars presence on frebreaks were indirectly. Footprints and trails of solitary adult animals or small groups of adults with piglets were on 13 places around three fragments. However, the frst evidence of a wild boar in the Park was in 2014, when an adult male was ran over in Anhanguera highway between two fragments. According to neighboring farmers, wild boars used to damage the crop felds of cassava, maize and fruits planted near the Park. A systematic survey on the spatial distributions of wild boars population is urgently necessary in all forest fragments inside the buffer zone of this Conservation Reserve, in order to take effective control measures of this species inside the Vassununga Park.
