Abstract

The variation in the dimensions of the vessels and rays in the hardwoods has a marked effect on wood quality and utility. In general these anatomical characteristics can vary noticeably within and among trees. The present investigation has tried to provide further information about this subject. Its specificgoal is to determine the variation in vessel and ray dimensions in the pith-bark and base-top directions. Twelve trees were cited according to diameter class in each of four kinds of spacing at 26-year-old experimental plantations of 'aroeira" Myracrodruon urundeuva F.F. & A.F. Allemão, at the São José do Rio Preto Experimental Station from the Forest Institute, State of São Paulo. Wooden discs were removed from each tree at base, DBH and 50% and 100% of commercial height, In order to allow the investigation of the vanation in vessel and ray dimensions, samples were taken in each disc at 0%, 50%, and 100% of the radius. The results indicated that the spacings and the diamêter class did not influence the anatomical characteristics. In the longitudinal direction the lowest values of vessel length and diameter were found at the base, while the highest were found at 50% of commercial height. The frequency of vessels per mm? decreased towards the tor. In the radial direction the lowest values for vesse length were found in the regions near the pith, and the diameter increased towards the bark, while the frequency decreased. The rays in the longitudinal direction showed that the frequency of rays per rnm and their height in um reached the highest values at the topo Their width in ~lm exhibited the highest values at the base. In the radial directions the frequency of rays per mm was the lowest in the region of the bark. The values for height and width in um were the highest in the same region.
