It was studied the influence of the potassium fertilizer on nutrient uptake by fourteen native tree species and Zea mays L.; in a greenhouse experiment, carried out from [anuary to April 1995. A soil with 0.72 mmoIK+/dm3 of soil by Mehlich-1 was used as substrate. After being limed, the treatments were established as folIow: without K application and with application of 84 mgk+/kg soil. The other nutrients were conveniently supplied in both treatments. The potassium fertilization increased K concentration in the shoot of all studied species, whereas the responses in shoot dry matter production were very distinct among them. Higher potassium concentration in the shoot were found for Zea mays L. and climax species, intermediate values for secondary species and lower K concentration in the vegetal tissue of pioneer species. Adding potassium increased nitrogen uptake by fedegoso (Senna macranthera (Collad.) I.&R) and phosphorus by angico vermelho (Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg.). An antagonistic effect among K, Ca and Mg decreased calcium uptake by cassia carnaval (Senna spectobilis (DC) I. & B) and bico de pato (Machaerium nictitans Vell. Benth.), and decreascd magnesium uptake by angico amarelo (Feltophomm dubium (Spreng) Taub.), cassia carnaval iSenna spectabilis (DC) I.&R), cassia verrugosa (Senna multijuga (LC. Rich) I.&R), ipê mirim (Stenolobium stans (Jun.) Seem.), bico de pato (Machaerium nictitans Vell. Benth.) and fedegoso (Senna macranthera (Collad.) I.&B.), however, the shoot dry matter productions was not reduced. In the clímax species only K shoot concentration was changed by the potassium fertilization.
