Natural populations of Tabebuia heptaphylla (Vell.) Tol. werc cvaluated through progenies trials in order to verify genetic variability and its sufficiency for thc "ex situ" conservation of the genetic resources of thc specics. Thc analysis of height of plants and DBH showed that thc populations tested (Bauru and Assis, São Paulo State) had little genetic variation and thc variation among trees of the same progeny was greater than among different progenies. Due to thc low estimatives obtained for the genetic parameters it was concluded that thc variability of other populations have to be analyzed in order to promote thc "ex situ" genetic conservation in an effective way and also that other characrcristics of thc trees must be analvsed to confirm the genetic variability of the popu laiions tested.
