This study is an inventory of dead trees in a "Terra Firme" forest, in Unhares, Espírito Santo. Dead tree trunks were surveyed in two primary forest plots and one disturbed forest plot. The prevailing modes of death (snapped, uprooted, buried under another tree fali and died standing) were differentamong plots. The orientation of fallen trunks does not conform to an uniform distribution, and mean of fali directions differ among plots. Fallen trees are smaller in the disturbed plot, probably due to small pioneer trees, which are more abundant at this site. The divergence of tree mortality patterns found among the three sites are interpreted as an aspect of the great structural heterogeneity of tropical forests.
