Abstract

Gas exchange measurement is used as a sensitive method to evaluate air pollution effects in urban arborization. Net photosynthesis and solid matter accumulation in detached leaves of Tabebuía chrysotrícha were determined. Trees planted along a main road were used as polluted sample. As controls, trees planted in a natural park in the city suburbs were used. Net photosynthesis rate of polluted samples was significantly lower, reaching only 54% of the control samples rate. Ash contents of polluted leaves was 45% higher than control samples. Probable influences of solid matter deposition in gas exchange process has been discussed.
