The use of seedling seed orchards for "ex-situ" genetic conservation of Araucaria angustifolia is discussed. Since the objective is the maintenance of the genetic base sampled in the original populations, the intensity of roguing in the progeny test is based on the concept of effective population size. Simulations using data of a progeny test planted in Colombo, PR, indicated that roguing above 50% of the plants for each sex, affect seriously the genetic representativity obtained in the sampling of the natural populations.
