The purpose of this paper is to report the behavior of Astronium urundeuva (aroeira) seeds after storage in liquid nitrogen at -196°C for five months. Seeds were collected from eight trees and mixed to form a single sample. Sub-samples were dried for 0,96 and 144 hours at25°C and 15% Rh. Seed humidity, aswell as germination before and after storage in liquid nitrogen for 30, 90 and 150 dayswere measured.ltwasfound thatseeds remained viable after ali of the above storage periods. It was concluded that cryopreservation is a promising method for the conservation of seeds of this species in gene banks after being dehydrated to 6% humidity.
