Seeds of Cedrela fissilis Vell. (Meliaceae) and Parapiptadenia rigida (Benth) Bren. (Mimosaceae) were placed under hypoxic conditions for 5,10 and 20 days after this time were sown in Petri dishes. Another set of seeds, alter the same period of submergence, was stored under dry conditions for 20 days before sowing. In order to know the tolerance of the two species to hypoxia, germination rate and alpha-amylase activitywere tested. Germination rate in the two species dropped alter anaerobiosis. In P. rígida germination was inhibited after 1O and 20 days of submergence but under the same condition the seeds of C. fissilis still germinated. Dry storage conditions affect significantly germination rate in both species. Alpha-amylase activity alter anaerobic and dry storage treatments dropped in P. rigida and stayed constant in C. fissílís. The drop in germination rate of seeds of C. fissilis suggests that during lhe hypoxic period, there was a mobilization of reserves. It's possible that the total inhibition of germination of P. rigida is related to the drop of alpha-amylase activity.
