The gallery forests are very important for the protection of the water courses, in the maintenance of the aquatic and terrestrial fauna, in the regularization of the hydro regimen and for the improvement of the quality of water. The critical situation in which these types of forest are found leaves no doubt on necessity to study the composition and the ecology of their remnants. The knowledge of water course marginal vegetation is essential for the characterization of the regional adjacent vegetation, thus permitting one to establish more adequate ways to handle and recover the altered areas. The forests are situated in the northwest of the State of São Paulo, within the municipality of Potirendaba (21° 01’ 34” S and 49° 22’ 38” W), at an altitude of 469 m. In order to characterize the gallery forests of the Ribeirão Borá and the Ribeirão Cubatão, trees, shrubs, herbaceous and lianas species of Magnoliophyta were identified. In the Ribeirão Borá, 46 families, 84 genera and 96 species were identified and in the Ribeirão Cubatão, 41 families, 94 genera and 109 species. Families with the highest number of species were Leguminosae, Asteraceae and Rubiaceae. Relating to the successional stages, majority of the species found in Ribeirão Borá were of early secondary and in Ribeirão Cubatão they were pioneers. This distribution of species shows that these gallery forests are in young condition. This floristic survey is important because it presents a list of species occurring in gallery forests of the northwestern region, which can be used in the reforestation of gallery forest itself and of adjacent.
