Abstract

Nearly 500 years ago, when the colonizers arrived at the coast of Brazil, the "Mata Atlântica" - Atlantic Rainforest - of Brazil stretched from the northeast to the south. This Rainforest has been reduced to only 5% of its original area. Several activities have contributed for the destruction, not only of the forest, but also of the local "calçaras" communities. Our knowledge about the medicinal flora of tropical forests and how it is used by the indigenous groups is very little. Also, our scientific ignorance on the medicinal flora of the "Mata Atlântica", and how it is used by the native groups, and their relationship with its natural resources - plant, animal and mineral are even more startling. Since 1989, we have been making a thorough and detailed ethnopharmacological research in around 12 "calçaras" communities of the "Juréia- Itatins" Ecological Station in "Mata Atlântica", in order to be better acquainted with its natural resource diversity. We have been documenting the rich therapeutic system of the "calçaras", based mostly on native medicinal plants, not known by us, their harmonious relationship with Nature and their botanical knowledge. In Brazil, 84% of ali drugs are imported. Sixty per cent of the drugs processed locally are consumed by just 23% of the population. The Ethnopharmacology can contribute to change our dependent situation, as well as to improve the appreciation of native community cultures and their interaction with the environment.
